update-manager tries to use the org.gnome.PowerManager interface to inhibit
sleep before it tries the freedesktop standard

I could actually work around the problem by removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf,
restarting, and rerunning 'sudo nvidia-xconfig' after I had installed
latest drivers from ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates.
