I found that by booting using Debian Squeeze with the user home
directory in a partition shared by Debian and Ubuntu, doing the set up
in Debian and rebooting in Debian, the configuration was saved. Booting
to Ubuntu then used the save state. So the problem appears to be lack
of state saving in U

Installing the TeamViewer debian package (available at
http://www.teamviewer.com) and launching it for the first time (after a
reboot) I can often reproduce the flickering and re-recognizing the
second monitor.
I forced that now with VirtualBox up and was not able to reproduce the
freeze. So still

is being set by the app armor profile..

I think that empathy needs to be told to not send old messages to the
notification area when the conversation window is opened. This would
involve a check to see if a window's already open, but I'm assuming this
is probably done already somewhere in the code.

I had the same problem with Inkscape in Maverick Meerkat after having installed
the textext extension !
I use a Ubuntu server without Gnome/KDE/Xfce. I only use a light-weighted IceWM.
Here is the error i got :

Yes the same bug is present in 10.04 and it uses a huge amount of memory
over time, days for example. I ran valgrind on the binary (not in debug)
and it says:

==5405== total heap usage: 707,791 allocs, 588,365
I just quickly checked a guest session and the problem did NOT occur in
the guest session.

Building on it being an SSD/race problem, I decided to add a delay
before gnome-settings-daemon would start. The relevant file that I
changed was /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop. I changed
the line:
Exec=/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon
to this:
Exec=bash -c
