The option that seems broken is a combination of "Visual Effects: None"
and using more than one row of workspaces. My guess would be that this
was broken for regular metacity when support was added to gnome-
panel/compiz to work with multiple rows of workspaces.

well, it could be that you actually only get a crash later on, when
gdm starts X.org on the framebuffer driver, and nvidia (or fglrx,
etc.) only gets loaded later on. So it would crash when you try to
start a 3D application, etc.

I think the fact that you haven't been getting VT1 starts confirms that
the /etc/init/gdm.conf fix is effective.

The thing is if you do:

...you get the wanted result. Its related to how key strokes are
interpreted within the gnome menu. If you do:

..you'll get the "System" menu instead of "Sound and Video". "System" is
wrong. "Sound and Video" is right.
