fix the issue (need to restart computer after applying as such. But

Thanks for doing all the research. I'm sorry for reporting a bug which
in the end seems to be just an configuration isue. However it confuses
me that manually mounting the share with lfs option also solves the
problem. It was thereby that I was assuming the problem was a bug in
gvfs.

Same problem here on a fresh lucid install. Same symptoms. Changing something
about the theme or background indeed "fixes" the panel somehow.

I would call this a workaround, not a fix, though:
The setting is not available from the Power Management Preferences,
making it hard to find.

I guess I must have a different problem because even after sudo apt-get
purge gnome-screensaver and rebooting, I still get the black screen
logging out from another account I switched to. :-(
