I'm not sure it's worth fixing in Karmic really. Everyone is busy
working on Lucid at the moment, this bug is not high priority and there

This issue does not only affect small screens. Using a 24' wide screen

It actually depends on the trailer you try.
in karmic , the user-agent trick made most of them work. But now Apple
added onother check on reported QT version through javascript. however
the Totem QT plugin is well made so it reports a recent version. So it
should work ..

I'm not in VMWare though. This is straight install, Ubuntu 9.10 fully
patched. Same problem as normal user or "sudo brasero"

Maybe previous comment was presumptuous.
I have the similar symptoms: have upgraded to lucid, can login to gnome
failsafe, but not gnome normal session.
When watching the X output and the gnome-session output, I see X crash
with output similar to that mentioned in bug #515846:

Ok, here are the results. I did two test runs:
1. I started your suggested command first and then disconnect AC. The
only notifications are those of AC connect/disconnect. After charge
state reached 0.0 i immediately reconnect AC. I didn't risk running out
of power.
2. I disconnect AC before star
