I switched to Apple Mail some weeks ago, and it turns out that at least
in my case the server is the reason why I received blank messages, since
the problem happens on this email client as well.

I've found a workaround (you probably know but just incase), completely
remove the top panel where the applets are, reboot (or restart desktop
environment), make a new panel and add everything back on it again

Notice that replacing the -raw96r with -sao makes both wodim and
Schily's cdrecord work, but produces an unreadable disk with the
following output on /var/log/messages:

any tracks I recognize!
