Having a similar issue. Hangs on start-up after updating a recurring
entry (changing which calendar it's assigned to) in a local calendar.
When launched from the terminal I get as far as;

I don't care if the issue is in the alarm-clock, pygtk or somewhere
else. The fact is that if I select Applications - Add/Remove... and
search for an alarm clock I get package "alarm-clock". If I then proceed
to install it and ever start it, my X session is immediately frozen.

Installed jaunty- fresh install. All i see on login screen is the box where you
fill the name. Select session/language buttons are gone. Later on I install
xfce4 and lxde, I logout, and -still- no session options. I tried to enable

UPDATE: I just checked if this is an issue with only CDs and not DVDs
and it turns out that it actually is an issue with mounting CDs as
mentioned above! When I insert an audio CD, all desktop icons disappear
and the computer behaves much like it did earlier.

Go to alarm-clock.pl and download alarm-clock-0.9.19 - fixes the bug.
Ubuntu packagers can update the package so it won't cause freeze
anymore. It can be easily packaged, because it's a small update of
Python version.
