Confirming the issue for gnome-power-manager: it sets brightness level to 100
as soon as it starts.
There is still something else that does the same while ubuntu is loading but

or Tasks icon.
I suppose the bug still exists in 2.25.92.

I was getting similar error messages in hardy 8.04.
Using "gconftool-2 --spawn" did not spawn a gconfd instance, gave the
error message below.
I identified the problem by running "strace -fF gconftool --spawn 2>

I don't think I'll be able to install jaunty soon. I can only confirm
that 8.04-LTS (with all latest updates) is affected too.
Easier steps to reproduce (tested at 8.04):
1. $ mkdir -p foo/bar
2. $ touch foo/bar/baz
3. $ chmod -R u-w foo
4. $ chmod u+w foo
5. delete directory `foo' to trash
* try
and the version without compiz.
Changing themes has no effect, it looks the same on all default themes.

So I fixed up the automake crap, and got the package to build; however,
the three new themes don't actually work. They appear in the theme
selector, but just with a big question mark preview, and if I select
them, it says that it isn't installed. But it's there..

When viewing the properties on a file in nautilus, the basic pane
consists of a number of pieces of information such as name, type, size
etc.
It has a location: entry as well but for long paths this information is
useless as it is 'ellipsised'
