If you are not sure you are using AWN, you are not using it... I found a solution to my problem, it is actually a compiz error. I had to set the number of virtual desktops to 1, not 4. I still have 4 horizontal workspaces and 1 vertical workspace. this seems kind of counter-intuitive, but it works.
