I had the same issue with VLC.
I fixed it by...
sudo apt-get remove vlc vlc-nox (obviously totem would go here)
Then it told me of the libraries no longer in use...

libvlc0 libwxbase2.6-0 libgsm1 libdvdnav4 libiso9660
is probably an unstable nvidea driver. Can't test it anymore, I
installed feisty now and got no problems anymore
