I realise that both problems are identical, so maybe my screenshot is redundant.
It appears to me that both problems are caused by the panel positioning itself for a 800x600 screen, even though a higher resolution has been selected. Like the experience of others here, the problem is temporarily fixable by simply expanding the panel and then unexpanding it again.
