Can confirm that this is also a problem on a Gateway MX6440 laptop.

I'm having the same problem after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid. The
brightness applet used to display correct info, now it shows 40% after

Same problem as in the previous two comments. Brightness applet still
works to adjust brightness (as it did in 8.04) but now (after installing
8.10) does not show the brightness percentage when hovered over -

I get the result described in this bug in Intrepid 8.10 (used to work in
8.04). I am not quite sure if the issue I am experiencing is the same as
