I'm having the same problem after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid. The
brightness applet used to display correct info, now it shows 40% after
logon and then when I change it it shows the above message on the
tooltip. Also, after logon, the display is very bright, I believe it's
100%. On Hardy it used to be the last setting from the previous session.
The applet can still change the brightness, it just doesn't display it
correctly. The laptop model is Acer Aspire 5101 ANWLMi, so it's not a
Dell. I'm not sure if this is a duplicate.
