This is fixed in oneiric (11.10) with the new gnome-panel.

With "classic" desktop and four columns and one row of workspaces, I
find that a window close to the left-hand edge of workspace 1 disappears
from the workspace switcher view when I click on workspace 4 in the
switcher. (It is still displayed after clicking on workspaces 2 and 3.)
It can be restore
Just to confirm that I notice the same issue. I'm using 11.04 with
classic desktop.
