I am also getting this problem. Empathy has been working fine for months
now (since I first installed Ubuntu 10.04 x64 on this laptop) and now
all of a sudden it continuously tries to connect to msn and never
returns any error, displays any contacts or connects.

you have to update your system. there is an update to papyon that fixes this
issue

It looks so,
Before upgrading from 9.1 I didn´t have problems.
After upgrading I wasn´t able to connect.
Altough empathy shows it is connected the information displayed is not correct
and others won´t see me online.
Pidgin doesn´t have this problem so it looks like empathy is having an issue.

I am also seeing this issue when attempting to use empathy to connect to
MSN using a non Microsoft issued ID (in my case cpare_j...@yahoo.com) -
the connection only reports "Connecting" and never returns. On the same
workstation connections to MSN via pidgin work without issue.

I am also getting this error, however I'm getting it in Lucid. My error
is a little different as it is saying "Offline - Account Disabled"
Logged into Hotmail to verify that the is disabled and lo and behold,
