I did a lot of research yesterday and I think it may not necessarily be a G-C-C
bug, it could also be an issue with package libcanberra as similar erratic
system sound behaviour was reported in 8.04 and seemingly fixed with a later
release of libcanb
Thank you for your work report, that seems a duplicate and might be
deprecated in karmic
