I did a lot of research yesterday and I think it may not necessarily be a G-C-C 
bug, it could also be an issue with package libcanberra as similar erratic 
system sound behaviour was reported in 8.04 and seemingly fixed with a later 
release of libcanberra for 8.10. 
Package website is http://0pointer.de/lennart/projects/libcanberra/. The latest 
released version is 0.16, however, the version provided with jaunty is 0.11 - 
any chance updating this could be useful? I haven't tried to install the newer 
version of libcanberra as  it is not available as a package. Any 
opinions/suggestions welcome.
