I use 10.04. After today's (2010-03-31) large upgrade to GNOME 2.30 also have
this problem. Tried to change the 'Enable mouse clicks with touchpad' option,
but it did not helped. Maybe there is some GConf key I can Change?

while everyone is commenting about this... Does anyone remember the default in

AFAIK it also sets the tap-to-click by default to off.
So i dont think it new users will find it difficult or awkward.

While stardust85 might should considered wording his reply differently,
disabling clicking with the touchpad by default is a *very strange*
choice. I also installed Karmic Alpha 5, and was baffled that a
functionality that works in every other operating system, and every
previous release of Ubuntu,
there is no need to add such comments there, could you move the
discussion to mailing lists?

If it will be disabled in final release, it will be a big shame for
ubuntu and you will probably recieve hundreds or even thousands bug
reports about it. And ubuntu will recieve very negative critique in
article reviews

Sounds like a hardware issue, I've never had that. On all other
operating systems tap-to-click is default and I believe it should be
in Ubuntu also. (Besides, do touchpads even report if they have a
button or not at hardware level?)

Don't some laptops (I think macs specifically) not have a mouse button?

I have to agree with Max. Tap-to-click is "confusing behavior?" It is
confusing to try to tap your touchpad, have it not click, be new to the
operating system and not know where to look to change the setting. This
would be a huge "papercut" if you ask me.

that would annoy more people by having it missing.

no, not enabling it is a choice since it's confusing behaviour and too
easy to trigger by error

Hmm, I have a fresh install of alpha-5 on my testing partition and

Shouldn't at least this one be enabled by default?

I'm not convinced this is fixed properly -- I upgraded from Jaunty to

Frank, you can simply use the gconf configuration editor to enable it.
Hit alt-f2, run gconf-editor.
Go to desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad and check the tap to click box.

This is a fairly broken hack but you can work around that setting by setting
the gconf key to 1 and then enabling horizontal scrolling in
gpointing-device-settings
Changing the key got tap-to-click working again for me :-)

Dana - this bug is about making gnome-mouse-properties work with the new
gnome-settings-daemon, and making sure that existing configs are
migrated correctly. If you have issues with the options available, then
please open a separate bug report at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ .

Hmm, something new I just noticed: the latest gnome-settings-daemon FORCES me
to choose either two-finger scrolling OR edge-scrolling, and does not allow
both -- thus overriding my preference I have set in a custom FDI file! In

Thank you for your bug report. It seems upstream are using different
GConf keys for the touchpad settings now, so gnome-mouse-properties is
modifying the wrong keys. We need to port gnome-mouse-properties to the
new keys and also make sure gnome-settings-daemon migrates existing
configs.

Vertical scrolling works on my laptop as usual,
horizontal scroll doesn't.
Like the forum discussion states, "synclient tapbutton1=1" enables
tapping for some.
using "synclient horizedgescroll=1" horizontal scroll acts like an vertical one.
But that may just be an malformed command...
