I am closing this bug now, since the behavior seems to conform to
specifications as described in the comments above. If you wish your mounts to
not show up, please mount them in /mnt/. All partitions mounted in /media
should show up on the desktop.

Is there a specification for what the intended behaviour is here? I've not
followed exactly the changes with moving from the gconf key to the hal rules or
whatever, but the net result is that I now see the opposite to when I filed the
bug.
In particular, the following fstab line does not create
