Im running Karmic Alpha5 with gnome-panel 2.27.91 and unfortunately this bug
isn't completely fixed yet.
When weather display is disabled in the clock preferences and a location is
added afterwards the clock still adds the empty space to the left. (See
attached screenshot)

I followed Sebastian's cue and looked at the preferences for clock
applet. The options for 'Show Weather' and 'Show Temperature' were
checked by default. After they were unchecked the space on the left is
no longer present. Thanks for looking into the matter.

Thanks for the bug report. You likely have no location configured and
that's the space for the weather informations, that's a known issue
