Stephen Donnelly's right. Had the same problem, found this page, and
tasksel allowed me to install Gnome when I chose to install Ubuntu
Desktop.
I've been using apt-get install several times, right down to attempting
installing the gnome-keyring-manager package (which can't be installed).

As a possible workaround I used tasksel to install the 'Ubuntu desktop'
task, this does not seem to depend on gnome-keyring-manager.
I haven't rebooted yet to see if the complete Ubuntu Gnome environment
is present.

This is still broken in May.
If gnome-desktop-environment is not the correct meta-package to use,
which package/task etc can be used to install the gnome environment?

I have (had) the same problem when installing Gnome on Kubuntu.
Apparently gnome-keyring-manager was pulled out of the hardy-dev-
repository on 2008-02-09 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/gnome-
keyring-manager/).
I worked around it by downloading the archived .deb from there and

I cannot reinstall my broken gnome because the package "gnome-keyring-manager"
deb file lack from the lepository,
only shows on the list (with 1 byte size)
When I try to install "gnome-desktop-environment" synaptic halts of this error:
