This bug is still present in Ubuntu 14.04 with Ekiga 4.0.1
I've added myself to the voice group but the problem is still there. Has
anybody else found a solution for this?

That was a rhetorical question. But let me rephrase it: "Does Skype do
free VOIP using open standard protocols?" Answer: No.
We are discussing Ekiga here which is a totally different product, so
please keep your opinions about it to yourself if you have nothing
constructive to add.

I registered with ekiga, tested everything (audio/video), then tried a test

It happens when ekiga is idle for a while.
If I disable/re-enable the account it starts working again.

I am using my own asterisk server for sip provider/proxy.
I don't know if there are any settings in asterisk that will help(?)

This problem is due to your provider. Some providers reject calls if the
PDUs come from different ports. And this is what Ekiga is doing.
I will try to contact my provider because I guess that Ekiga is sip
conform and so the provider needs to adopt its configuration. But I'm
also not an expert. I
After some more experimentation, I'd like to document my findings for
anyone considering to use SmartVoip or any other betamax-based providers

2) Number format is described correctly.

After I finally got it working (somehow), here are some thoughts. It
seems that:
1) I shouldn't use proxy sip:sip.smartvoip.com or sip.smartvoip.com <---
this results in unconditional inability to connect to any host
2) having the number ending with @smartvoip.com results in security check

I have backported ekiga from lucid to hardy, but it doesn't seem to work
properly. I get the same message as previous posters, "security check
failed". Only for betamax sip, though. ekiga.net echo test works just
fine. The workaround of starting as root doesn't help. I added myself to

I am also having the same problem. Adding myself to the voice group and
downloading the latest version from the PPA did not resolve the problem.
The only workaround I can find is to start the client as root.

I tried Ekiga again.. now, with Karmic. And tried a call.
With a normal telephone number, i get the error 'security check failed'.
With the 5...@ekiga.net, it seems to start to call, and pick up, but I don't
hear anything.
When I tried to close the call, Ekiga froze, and I had to forcefully kil

When I just start linphone-3, I can make a few calls. Then it would ask
my sip password for about 10 times and won't connect anyways. I do not
run anyl firewall at the time and the packets are routed correctly, I
think (on ubuntu jaunty moblock/blockcontrol coexisted with both ekiga
and linphone).
tried to add myself to the group "voice" - with no avail. I just don't
get why all of a sudden upgrades break a lot of things that seemed to be
all right... That's not only ekiga's or linphone's issue.

You should add yourself to the group "voice", that I think was created
by Ekiga when you installed it.
Open a shell and type:
