This drove me crazy on Ubuntu distros so I switched to Mint. It never
happens on Mint, I wonder why?

I would have thought that I must have the correct plugins if VLC Media player
can play them.
The smallest AVI file I have is about 8.5 MB, I can send that if you like.

Using Nautilus, the time it takes to display files in (for example) the
/usr/bin directory with 1573 files takes 2 mins 23 seconds.
It seems the problem has to do with using 'icon' or 'list' view. I
always use list view and that causes it to take over 2 mins. If I use
