I'm not sure why you come to that conclusion, but I always authorize the
accounts whenever requested (the top right menu button turns red). In
fact, I repeatedly authorized and unauthorized the gtalk account when
debugging the problem, trying to make Empathy show the contacts.

This only seems to happen if I launch Empathy from the Unity Launcher.
It works correctly when I set my status to Online through the Unity
Panel and then launch Empathy from there as well.

This problem happens in two computers, whether I use auto-login or not, with
Ubuntu 12.10.
I configured two accounts on the Online Accounts window: Facebook and Google.
My Facebook contacts always appear on Empathy, but gTalk contacts almost
never appear, with the error mess

I beg to differ. Though sure this is not a critical bug, it certainly is
one since it's well documented that new vts should be created
sequentially, vt7, vt8, etc...
Also before I came to the startx "discovery" I've found quite a few
complaints, some very old dating from hardy or 2005 (

I could notice that the bug disappeared when I disable the Fast User
switch and that consequently I had all my logout menu entries restored.
I guess this is somehow linked at the way the menu probes for checking
if the FUS is set to appear.

folder and the desktop was frozen (only, other app widows would work
