I still can't get this to work.
Tried the modeset in /etc/default/grub... it just gets to a blank screen.
I don't have an integrated GPU, so it's using the nvidia.

I found the culprit, there was a change in the Ubuntu AppIndicator's
opacity. Sorry for bad reporting.

Just installed Ubuntu 21.10 and one functionality bug is very visible:
Shutter,VNC Connect, OBS Studio, nVidia Optimus icons in the tray area
do not show unless we have the mouse over them. The interaction works,
but the icons are invisible in normal mode. This is both in X11
I tested multiple IBus IMs, and AFAICT the issue is a pure ibus-mozc
one. Consequently I now believe that a reasonable solution is to let the
ibus-mozc package install an autostart file for launching Xwayland. That
way users who don't use ibus-mozc won't be affected.
