I think the little red X icons in the corners of every window (whence
the window is "deleted") are a pretty big clue that this shouldn't be
used. In Firefox, there is no "delete" concept for a web page, so they
are able to use it without concern for alternative meanings.

I'm running Maverick AMD64 and it behaves the same way if I've had a USB
drive inserted.
If I put the USB drive back in and empty the trash if behaves normally

Right. But, depends on the screen resolutions as well. You can always
move the window up by holding the Alt key and dragging the window by the
mouse in what ever direction you want. But, it should detect the proper
resolution of the screen and adjust it to fit the screen size.

I have 264 files in the trash, but when I click on the nautilus trash,
there are no files and the cursor waiting animation never ending...I
could see the files in /home/romain/.local/share/Trash/files/ in
nautilus or in gnome-terminal.

If there are further issues with Google Contacts it would be nice to
have extended debugging logs for e-addressbook-factory. To do this e
-calendar-factory needs to be stopped (along with evolution), and
restarted; with a command like this:
killall -9 e-addressbook-factory; LIBGDATA_DEBUG=3 /usr/l

The excellent video of Lucazade shows clearly how gnome-settings daemon first
works, but is then killed.
It really may be that gnome-settings-daemon somehow is still hanging after
first login, but is killed after a new logout/login.
