Although I'm running x86-64 when I select transparent background and
move the slider it stays a solid white color, but if I put it to
background image file it becomes transparent and responds to the slider.

I have exactly the same problem since ~ 5/19/10. It occurred after an
update, as far as I can tell.
Also the menu under the mail icon in the indicator apple has changed, I

drivers found in the search, and they all work fine in the present
session. On reboot, however, the visual effects defaults to "None" and

I noticed there isn't the same behavoir for all the USB pendrives. For
example a Kingston 512 MB (from lsusb -> Bus 001 Device 019: ID
0930:6533 Toshiba Corp. 512M Stick) has this problem, while a Sandisc
8GB (Bus 001 Device 020: ID 0781:5406 SanDisk Corp. Cruzer Micro 1/2/4GB

I had locked my screen before leaving my computer for a few minutes.
When I return, I type in my password to unlock the screen then I get

Same problem to me, both bug in Ubuntu 9 and Ubuntu 10.
When copy (or move) ISO file (more than 1G) to NFS driver, computer
cashed.
Only way to recover, is power off PC.
