@mikefreeman what version of empathy and ubuntu are you using? Bug
reports from PPA aren't valid. You may want to try uninstalling the
telepathy version and using the one provided by Ubuntu.

The whole purpose to a newline in any chat window would be if you were
copying text into the window that had a new line, which in my test it
worked fine (see attached screenshot). I am using the Ubuntu theme.

I do not specify a port number. Problem seems to be related to certain
compression algorithms that sometimes the server proposes and the
underlying client does not support. There was another bug regarding
this issue with vinagre on ubuntu 8.04

Set the screensaver to 1min (blank screen or whatever).
