Quick fix solution:
I was having a similar problem with intrepid.
Totem, and vlc both refused to play xvid and flv files, despite having
gstreamer-ffmpeg installed.
Reason:
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg kept looking for libx264-57 (hardy version) instead
I suppose it will be, I just have no idea when, but you can use the SVN
version which has this bug fixed.
