I just read that there is a workaround for this issue: increasing the
panel size from 24 pixel to 26 pixel.
So I started a third experiment:
1) I increased the panel size to 26 pixel.
2) I start an maximized application "Firefox" (one that opens full screen on my
computer) --> icon is shown
3) I
Today (Jul 4th), I found out that totem(-xine) crashed. I did scaled
down the png file from 1280 to 1024. It worked. For pete's sake, the fix
is very much needed to kill this bug.

P.S. I also just noticed the current behavior is inconsistent with the
search gnome-panel applet, which puts the folder to search as a separate
option from the ones you get by clicking add/remove critera.

Well, any suggestion as to how to obtain debug info? It's not like using
valgrind+evolution as my main mail client for weeks is a realistic
option. Not to mention the fact that even if that was possible, valgrind
would have reported so many errors already that the real one would be

/etc/fstab
if this is the case try the solution:
1) place a noauto option in your /etc/fstab smbfs entry
2) mount network shares using /etc/rc.local
if your network share is to be mounted to /mnt/shared then within /etc/r
