Yep, it did, using 2.6.15-1-k7. I ran that kernel for a long time
with X11R6 on top and didn't have any problems at all, so it seems
very unlikely that the kernel is to blame.

I see this behavior too. I finally gave up using dpkg --reconfigure and just
hand editted xorg.conf.
