Some i965 are only supported in the upcoming 2.6.22. Although your i965
should be supported for a long time from what I see in the kernel
changelog, maybe some fixes of 2.6.22 are required.
You should check what dmesg says when you load the intel_agp kernel
module. It is the one that should make /

Oh, dear. This bug got closed one day before I actually tried compiz.

I'm running into exactly the same problem: compiz works in that
compositing and other effects work fine, but there's no window manager
at all. Moving/removing .gconf* and .gnome2* does nothing. I have
lib
Ooops. False alarm on my part. Turns out I had a one character typo in
my xorg.conf.
There's a completely separate bug about switching away from the X server
and back to it again that I'll file, but this now appears to work.

Have just done a fresh install of Etch and used the xserver-xorg ati
driver. After 10 to 15 minutes it locks up, keyboard is dead.
