looks like the whole problem was caused by some cruft left over from an old
installation of the nvidia-graphics* packages in /var/lib/dpkg/diversions.
I just deleted the old stuff from the diversions file and all probs are gone.
Looks to me that the latest nvidia-graphics packages handle those

This problem seems to be completely fixed in the 3-4 most recent
versions of XFree86 in unstable. It can probably be closed now. I
haven't experienced the error in over a month.
