Here's something to check:
The postinst script only regenerates /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 if it is
unaltered since the previous dpkg upgrade. This is achieved by keeping the
md5 checksum of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum.

I've looked at the code of auto_answer, and I fail to find what else is
needed to change default displayed answer.

dpkg-reconfigure hang when I try to reconfigure the package using debconf.
