Please excuse me and thank you for your reply,
it had something to do with icewm, when I changed the theme recently,
setting the xterm title worked perfectly again.

I unset PROMPT_COMMAND, of course. PROMP_COMMANDs default value here
is:
echo -ne "\033]0;[EMAIL PROTECTED]: ${PWD}\007"
which results in a
