What do you mean ? Set I915_KMS in the kernel config ? It shouldn't make
any differen

Here's 2 different workarounds:
1 - enable KMS in the kernel
This caused everything to be super slow
2 - delete or comment out /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
This essentially disabled KMS from the module
