I was messing with the modprobe configuration yesterday so things may have changed between then and now. If I use the command line vga=i915 then I get a blank screen until X loads up (I use kdm) I am talking about stock debian kernels. Specifically about 2.6.32-1-686 and the previous 2.6.32-trunk-686. It has CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS not set. I have an intel laptop which has this card according to lspci: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a02] (rev 0c) I am already happy without KMS but I suspect that it won't last.
