Can you please tell me where could I find
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.6
Well, they never did put it into their Packages file, though it is on
disk.
This tells me I will be stepping into deeper water than my education
level is appropriate for. I might even end up locking myself out of my
system.

OK, I managed to put
deb http://kernel-archive.buildserver.net/debian-kernel sid main
in sources.list, and even though I see the "30" stuff in

however only the "29" stuff is yet in

What about 2.6.30-rc7 if rc8 isn't available on

Ho ho ho, still a disaster, and even in experimental, there is no such a
high numbered kernel yet. Alas, must do
# dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2%3a2.6.1-1_i386.deb
# aptitude forbid-version xserver-xorg-video-intel
Used
$ apt-cache policy $@

Does this still happen with intel 2.7.99.1-2 and kernel 2.6.30-rc8 or so?

I installed a kernel with the patch referred to in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=526169#41 and the tiling
persists. However I managed to solve the problem by setting the Tiling
option to false as mentioned in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21246#c10

This is a horrible bug that I see on my 855GM (Thinkpad X40), forcing
me to use 2.6.26 instead.
It might be a good idea for the kernel team to see this because they
might be able to cherry pick the patch?

This is not a bug in xorg intel driver itself but in kernel KMS code.
See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21246 for more details and
link to linux git comming with patch.
Installing 2.6.30-rc4 fix this issue.
Maybe this bug(s) should be reassigned to debian linux kernel package? Patc
I'm experiencing the same behavior with version 2:2.7.0-1, but X is only
broken with kernel 2.6.29-1-686. I get a correct display with kernel
2.6.26-2-686.
I attach X logs for both kernels.

Roger. Here you go my man. .old is the unhappy new run.
Don't worry about 'dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so failed'. I
purged that package momentarily but it didn't make any difference.

We need your full X log,

severity 526169 grave
retitle 526169 can't even read the login screen
thanks
2:2.7.99.1-1 is a little better. At least the Debian logo is readable
on the xdm login screen, but still not any other words.
