As far as the bad initial video mode choice of 800x600 goes, that's the x server's decision, and I've argued that it's wrong, but had no luck. Your VGA doesn't actually advertise 1280x768, so it's not included in the mode list, but you could add it using xrandr. For both of these problems, we keep
