Well, here we go again. I finally managed a
backtrace using the core dump method (and yes,
this froze my machine :-)
Hope this is of help for somebody.

and found the crash didn't occur when I called /usr/bin/X directly.

I installed xserver-xorg-core-dbg and tried attaching to the running X
server using gdb, but that didn't generate any useful info:
