There's at least one bug in configure_monitor that I found during my
testing. The place where configure_monitor decides to pre-answer the
selection method with "Advanced" may be wrong. If I leave it as it
appears in the original file:

Hello again. As a reminder, the point of this bug is that the
xserver-xfree86 config script uses get-edid to determine the monitor's
horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates, and then discards the
information. The fix I'm suggesting is fairly obvious and simple
