I think that this issue is somehow serious (even if I post the bug as
"important") because the radeon driver is automatically loaded by X with
DRI enabled and can lock up the computer of freshly installed systems.

I have also been observing such corruption since quite some time on a GM965
with KMS+DRI2. I think this issue is similar (if not the same) to that

Basically, the right edge of Alps touchpads is not correctly autodetected, so
you need a hal rule to fix it and make vertical scrolling work.

Just wanted to add that I have also tried installing kdm and KDE - because I
thought it could be a GNOME/GTK+ related problem, but I got the same results.
However, qtconfig looks ok (i.e. menu labels, text in text areas etc all visible
and readable).
