It would be really nice if this bug could get fixed for Lenny.
There's a simple patch. The bug is still present in x11-apps/7.3+2.
I would hate to think of having to work around this bug for the entire
life of Lenny.

Are you saying that the bug is fixed in lenny?
It is my understanding that once a release goes stable, bugs in it are
not normally fixed, except for security vulnerabilities. My goal was to
report it now in the hopes that when lenny comes out it will be fixed in
lenny. I am reluctant to upgrade
