Configuring a Compaq TFT5000 Monitor

I have a compaq TFT5000 Monitor on my newly installed Debian system, using am Nvidia Vanta card with 16MB of RAM.  I can't get X to start except using a config which gives me 640x480 mode, which is practically useless.  The error I get is   (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config
