I recommend you to backup your data ASAP and replace your harddisk. When
it starts to act like that, it is generally very close to total failure.
I second that as I have had that error several times in different hdds
and they all went nuts after a while

It also happened to me when I passed to unstable and then to xorg. I
think it was related to the keyboard settings, at the moment I did a
dirty fix as I added on my .bashrc the command "setxkbmap gb" (did not
have time yet to configure x properly)

There aren't many control keys. Maybe control-t (teach)?
Control-e (explain) might also be viable, but normally,
it's end-of-line in emacs. [Control-t is transpose in
