d a backup of my /etc directory which was pre-potato and a few weeks old, so I reinstated it then went to /var/cache/apt/archive and did dpkg -i *.deb. Not very elegant, but after a few blips and tinkering I got a working /etc directory with everything where it should be. Phew!! -- Phillip Dea

e a look at whether you are using Ultra DMA and try disabling it. I have had few problems with drives bought in the last year - my current drive, a Quantum Fireball EX 6.4 GB, has behaved flawlessly.
