Well I decided to go ahead and upgrade to glibc2.1 when I found all the new packages in unstable were compiled with it. It meant I couldn't get, for instance, the new Gnome stuff. I had already upgraded to the 2.2 kernel and had upgraded the recommended files to get this working OK. I then upgraded glibc and ldso and then X and so on. Because I have a dial-up connection to the Internet I cannot upgrade to Potato until I can get my hands on some Potato CD-ROMS. I had three problems. The first, JAVA, has now been resolved. The second, Applix, has a workaround which I am not too happy with because I loose TTF support. the third is X itself. I sometimes get a grey screen for a good few seconds when starting X from the command line before Window Maker kicks in. I have not solved this one. All in all I am glad I upgraded. Having said that, I enjoy tinkering so am not too bothered at attempting to get broken apps working - but apart from the apps mentioned above all is well. -- Phillip Deackes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Debian Linux v.2.1
