Hello, first is xdm started, is there an xdm process in the table? If not
do as root /etc/init.d/xdm start That should give the logon screen for X.
Let me know how things work. also if you suspect xdm errors look at the
file /var/log/xdm-errors.

add some debian stuff to it. The debian is on another drive. There was
talk about mounting the drive under the anonymous directory tree. I can't
use hardlinks on different drives and/or partitions or filesystems. I was

Hi, what is exactly is your problem? If any? I could not get my linux
box to recognise my kingston ethernet card (which emulates a ne2000
card) When I installed the base system I had to choose a DEC-2*** I
can't remember the rest of the name. I hope this is of some use to you.

yes there is. There is a file called status in /var/lib/dpkg. the file
status will tell you what programs are installed and i think but don't
quote me programs that are not installed. At any rate take a look at
this file and see if it helps you

It recommands xserver-vga16 | xserver. It provides X11R6. Read the
Packages file if you don't believe me.

hi, remove all of X and start again (hopefully you have all the packages
on your computer) use dpkg -i package-name to install them. I did this
about 20 different time and it works. I don't use dselect, it is a waste
of time. If you have trouble or don't have the files on your computer

Hi, there is a million and one ways to do computing. People do things
differently. No one way is right or wrong just different. there is a
file in /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config. You can run that and it will step you
through the configuration of the xserver. Make sure you have the monitor
verti
Why don't you try dpkg -r gzip.
Then dpkg -i gzip_1.2.4-15.deb and see what happens.

I hope you are using xdm. If not then this won't help you. You have to
edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. There is a section in it called
Screen. There you should have the settings for your current monitor.
You can edit that section with the new monitor settings. I hope this helps.
