unstable so I have access to the alsa 1.0 sources, but I'm currently

From what I understand it is a fairly popular via chipset. I am also
running the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel. Anyone have any ideas why I would not
be able to enable dma on any of my drives? I know the drives can do it
b/c dma works in mandrake.

The kdm approach requires you to have the x-server running
all the time. The startx method does not, and the debian
method requires you to restart X after a change, so would
work either way.

You need to be root (or you can specify the full path for
the command, but it won't necessarily help you if you need
root permissions to read things anyway). Su to root, or
log in as root, and then run lspci and dpkg-reconfigure
and things will go as clockwork. Which means they'
there. You run the risk of being blamed for any problems, be they due
to you or not, and possibly run the risk of having linux permanently
(or at least long-term) banned - many MCSE types are nervous around
linux. Try to get their buy-in - life will be much easier.

I downloaded all the files necessary (from debian homepage) to install
Linux on my computer, but when I tried to download the Linux kernel
image it first opens the file, which looks like machine code, then I did
a save as and my only choices are html or txt. How do I save the kernel
image?

Yet everytime I reboot my computer, I get another new email telling me

This will create a file called /sbin/hotplug which does the same stuff as
usbmgr did for the 2.2 kernels.
Alternatively if you are already running a "testing" / "Woody" system then
just do:
apt-get install hotplug

printing to a .ps file and then doing:
