ew chipset (82563EB) and waited so long before releasing
the sources for it so they haven't made it into the kernel tree yet.
I thought about downloading the same kernel source tree (2.6.16) and
compile the module sources against it, but this broke halway during
the compilation...
Any ideas?

That's not the case anymore, there's only "testing" on these discs - at
least the last two releases.
Of course, you can always downgrade the system when installed, but I
guess that's not always an option.

queries. If you have firewall rules that only let through hostname
lookups for the root user, you'll probably experience timeout problems
when using a normal user account.

follow what you have done so far, are you through with
the setup process or perhaps in the middle of it? If you have/had
network connection during the setup, the settings should be saved
after completion and you should have no problems at all.
